While scrolling through old machines on Kleinanzeigen, I stumbled upon this wonderful Metabo Sb EDV 800/2S R+L drill which I could not resist buying and would be a really good addition to my workshop in a drill stand. So without wasting a second, I bought it for €25 and started researching how to replace the electric motor’s carbon brushes and where to renew the grease to make it work like on day one.

I started by disassembling the metal gear housing, the electronics, and the stator. You can do this by removing the screws you’ll see when looking at the drill from the front.

The motor carbon brushes I searched for are placed here, and fresh ones can be bought on Amazon for around €7. So, I replaced them right away.

Additionally, I wanted to renew the lubricant in the gear box, which I started by flooding with brake cleaner to remove the old grease. Wait for it to dry and apply new grease. I used some Hilti grease I had lying around.

A really annoying thing was that this mode switch must have gotten stuck over time, but after cleaning it, it rotated quite freely again. You can remove it by pushing it up with a flat screwdriver and then loosening the screw. Make sure not to tighten the screw too much after cleaning as this results in the switch being stuck.

After this restoration and a lot of scrubbing of the old patina and dirt, I let the drill spin for about 5 minutes on full speed to get the carbon brushes to fit to the stator (there may be increased sparking during this process) and placed it in my drill stand that I bought on AliExpress. This drill stand may not be the best one, but it fulfilled my needs.
